NIBELHEIM By: Chrissy
Chrissy : For those of us in the States and other parts of the world, who have not
heard of Nibelheim, tell me who is in the band and how did all of you originally get
together.
Nibelheim : We formed in November 2003, when Luca and I decided to create a
solid band, when we finally felt ready to begin something serious after a lot of
experiences in different bands. Creating Nibelheim was not so simple: we reached
stability only in July 2005, when, after many line-up changes, Federico, Andrea
and Gabriele entered the band.
Chrissy : How did you come up with
the name Nibelheim.?
Nibelheim : I chose the name when I
was studying for an examination
concerning German philology, and I
was fascinated by the name Nifelheim,
that means “Land of mist”. It took me
only one second to change a letter and
here is the name “Nibelheim”.
Chrissy : What bands influenced you
to become musicians
Nibelheim : There are a lot of bands
that go on influencing us. Metallica,
Nevermore and Pantera are
undoubtedly three of the most
important ones. Anyway, the greatest
part of the thrash bay area can be
found in our style.
Chrissy : What does each individual
member bring to the band....meaning
how do the different personalities get
along, who writes the lyrics, the music.
Is it based on past experiences?
Nibelheim : We are not only a band, but first of all a great family. That’s why we
love creating new songs, because we all take part to the creation of our music:
everyone of us proposes his ideas and it’s very unusual to reject a proposal. As
far as the music is concerned, it is Luca’s, Federico’s, Gabriele’s and Andrea’s
“homework” (except for “Dancers to God”, cause I took part the musical creation).
As for the lyrics, they are exclusively written by me; the guys trust me, and they
never have objection on my lyrics, that can be considered as mirrors of my
personal experiences and thoughts.

Chrissy : I know a lot of band struggle
with musicians coming and going. How
important do you feel it is to keep the
same line-up in the band?
Nibelheim : In two words, I cannot
imagine Nibelheim with another line-up.
At the beginning, obviously, we had a
lot of changes, ‘cause it was not so
simple to find out the best members.
But in 2005, when Federico entered the
band, we were all conscious that that
was the final and definitive line-up. I
consider that moment as the beginning
of Nibelheim story, and if in the future
someone of us will leave the band, the
name will leave us too, cause Nibelheim
is Stefania, Luca, Federico, Andrea,
Gabriele, full stop. As I told you before,
we are first of all a family, a family
bound by love, experiences, dreams,
future and past.
Chrissy : Censorship, fear, politics
seem to form the basis for a lot of
bands. What are the outside
influences you may feel when writing
and performing your music? Do you
worry so much in that country about
thinge like censorship or are you pretty
much free to speak your mind as
musicians?
Nibelheim : Everyone who listens to
Metal music is aware of its
outspokenness, truthfulness and purity.
The ones who decide to play in a metal
band do not want to became richer, but
just do it ‘cause it is the perfect way to
express yourself, without any fear or the
requirement of being “politically correct”.
We scream what we feel, with all the
voice that lives in us.
Chrissy : When you first started in
this band, how was your music
received there? the reaction of the
people...and have things gotten any
easier since the beginning (by that I
mean being booked into clubs, getting
your music heard, etc..)
Nibelheim : We have been loved and
supported by our public from the
beginning
we had the possibility to take part to big concerts (supporting bands as Sadist,
Cadaveria and many others), compilations and we have released lots of
interviews. Anyway, today as yesterday, it’s very difficult to go on playing Metal,
cause Italian scene do not support this kind of music so much. It’ a shit.
Chrissy : What has been the hardest sacrifice you have had to make in order
to be in the band?
Nibelheim : In a word, conciliating the band affairs and our jobs. Sometimes we
have to drive all night long in order to play, then go home and face an entire day
at work without sleeping.
Chrissy : How is it being a woman in this business..esp being the "front woman"
for this band? Do you feel people have a preconceived idea of who you are?
Chrissy : Is this the first band you were all involved in? Any side projects or solo
work?
Nibelheim : Everyone of us experienced in a lot of bands before, which lasted 2
or 3 months: when we created Nibelheim (our most important experience!) we felt
ready to begin something serious. Federico and Gabriele currently play in a
Danzig tribute band, and I have an acoustic project together with my best friend
Vale, a project I’m very proud of and whose name is Scarlet Goddess. Our first cd
will see the light very soon.
Nibelheim ; Preconception is always round the corner. Anyway, I’m strong
enough to face each of them: I forget them because it is impossible to
domesticate those idiots who can only scream “naked! Naked!” when I am on the
stage. It is not important HOW many fans you have, but WHAT KIND of fans you
have ;)
Chrissy : Any strange superstitions or habits before a show? How have you dealt
with odd things happening during a show?
Nibelheim : You cannot imagine how many funny things we have in our
memories! Because of some technical problems during a show, we had to play in
the complete darkness!! But the best one was, and always will be, when Gabriele
broke his jeans on his ass during his head banging!! Ahahaah!! Anyway, the best
thing to do is to go on with nonchalance!
Chrissy : Some consider you a big
part of the Italian underground, has this
been a benefit or a liability?
Nibelheim : Do people really think this
of us? Great!!! Anyway, it is nor a
benefit nor a liability: it’s only a thing
that makes us very proud of our work,
cause it means that we succeeded in
explaining our voice!
Chrissy : Are there any misconceptions
you feel the rest of the world has about
the Italian metal scene?
Nibelheim : Unfortunately, also
because of some recent events, our
answer is “yes”. And it’s a pity, because
the general Italian opinion on metal has
been compromised because of few
people. We all hope that time will give
us the possibility to “revenge metal”.
We need it, because many of us love
deeply this kind of music.
Chrissy : How difficult has it been to
maintain a personal life through all of
this?
Nibelheim : Sometimes there are
some personal problems that make
you go under and under.. Fortunately,
we always help each other.
Chrissy : For younger musicians
looking up to Nibelheim, what would be
some advice you would give them?
Nibelheim : We’d ask them: “And
you? What do you suggest for us?”.
Learning is never enough!
Chrissy : Can we expect any videos
soon?
Nibelheim : Well, I’m very glad to tell
you that we have just finished to shoot
our first video! It was very exciting,
funny and unbelievable!! (thank you
so much to our directors and friends
Gianni and Stefania!). It will be a
surprise that we will show you together
with our next EP, The Waiting Room!
Chrissy : For those who are in your
area,what is your upcoming tour
schedule?
Nibelheim : We are now working to set the last dates for the upcoming promotion
of The Waiting Room. We’ll tell you everything as soon as we’ll be ready! ;)
Chrissy : what merchandise is available?
Nibelheim : Stickers, t-shirts and sweatshirts. But pay attention because the new
merchandise will be available very soon!
Chrissy : thank you again for your time, Stephania! the rest of the world awaits
NIBELHEIM! Any last words you wish to leave us with?
Nibelheim : Thank you too!! I hope I’ll have the chance to drink a fucking beer
with you and to play in front of your readers!!
